We've made it to the beginning of Summer!!! The Burlington Farmer's Market opens this Saturday, May 10 (City Hall Park) and will be held every Saturday, rain or shine from 8:30am-2pm. Their website has all kinds of useful info - for example when you can expect to find your favorite veggies... looks for asparagus, beet greens, fiddleheads, radishes, rhubarb and spinich this weekend, along with a listing of all the vendors and links to their sites - from Stray Cat Flower Farm to Does' Leap Goat Cheese, to Willow Hill Farm with their amazing sheep yogurt and cheeses.... and of course all the other fantastic farmers, fresh fruit, veggies and everything else...

Standing Up to the Madness

Standingupweb
Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! is in Burlington today (May 3) for a talk and a book signing today at 2pm at Borders Books on Church Street.

About Standing Up to the Madness:

In their NEW BOOK Amy and David detail the ways in which grassroots activists have taken politics out of the hands of politicians. Standing Up to the Madness tells the stories of everyday citizens who have challenged the government and prevailed.

The book not only is a timely, inspiring, and even revolutionary look at who wields the greatest power in America--everyday people who take a chance and stand up for what they believe in--but also offers advice on what you can do to help.

Where are the millions marching in the streets to defend
human rights, civil liberties, and racial justice? Where is the mass revulsion against the killing and torture being carried out in our name? Where are the environmentalists? Where is the peace movement?
The answer: They are everywhere.

The award-winning sister-brother team of Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now!, and investigative journalist David Goodman traveled the country to detail the ways in which grassroots activists have taken politics out of the hands of politicians. Standing Up to the Madness tells the stories of everyday citizens who have challenged the government and prevailed.

Qawwalilargephoto

Mehr & Sher Ali and Musicians this Friday night at the Flynn 8pm
(with free pre-performance lecture at the Amy E Tarrant Gallery)

Strong, soaring voices and explosively rhythmic hand-clapping characterize Qawwali, devotional music and song based on the mystic poetry of Sufi masters. An ensemble of nine musicians, led by brothers and master qawwals Mehr and Sher Ali, perform heart-rending, percussive, and deeply spiritual music that transcends cultural boundaries, issuing a universal invitation to share in powerful emotions of pure love, the pain of separation, and the joy of union. The brothers Ali are students of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and family, venerated as the greatest of all Qawwali artists.
